Back in 2002, I designed the sounds and music for a computer-game called “Fragmind”, a software companion to a boardgame from Fragminder bvba. My score was built around a set of samples specially recorded for the project, but options for complexity were rather limited by memory constraints and the requirements of the game mechanics. What remained was a strong desire to further explore the potential of these sounds, especially using granular synthesis software. Over the next year, I recorded the multiple segments of what would eventually become "Advancing Pawns", a slowly evolving, brooding sonic landscape. It elaborates on the soundtrack of the original game, while digging deeper into darker, more menacing territory.

Twenty years onwards, granular synthesis has become a widespread method for sound design and, in addition to software, various hardware equipment now offers this functionality too. The temptation to load a selection of the original samples into a digital synthesizer and re-explore them in a fresh piece was too big to resist, resulting in "Mended Shards".
